Have a look at CivicSpace, which is a community cms built on Drupal,
maintained in parallel with Drupal:
www.civicspacelabs.org

The blogs area on the CivicSpace Labs site
 http://civicspacelabs.org/blog
area on their site behaves in exactly the manner you describe...an overall
stream of all latest individual blog postings that allows you to drill anto
any given blog.

Here's the CS roadmap:
http://civicspacelabs.org/developers/roadmap

You will note that CS developers are constantly at work developing newer,
better modules for CS, and then making sure that those CS modules make it
back into core Drupal releases.

So, essentially, you have all the power of ongoing, updated Drupal but also
have much easier install, admin, and functional components built-in from the
get-go, courtesy of an aggressive CivicSpace developer community.

HTH,

jj
