It's also just plain ugly when you have to link to such sites from a
site that you're maintaining and not very meaningful to humans.

So, when I have to update broken "uglyurl.com" links that are on my
site, the url tells me nothing about where the page is located in the
site's hierarchy. I have to start from the homepage and find my way to
said page. This isn't always a trivial thing on large sites (of course
I use google instead).

Ok. I'm nitpicking but it does happen. Why use ugly urls unless you
need to. To me it's just another part of good usability.
