John,

Go to this website: http://www.supercircuits.com/

If you have time, ask the people at supercircuits to send you a catalog, you will be able
to find everything you need to make your ChickenCam. They have some very low lux black &
white cameras that will see better than we can in the dark, and the good news is that these
are the least expensive. Most WebCams have a lux of 5 or higher, not good! I remember
seeing a color camera with a lux of 0.8 but I think you will want to go with one that is lower
because of night conditions.
I have purchased equipment from them which works great. Most of the cameras can be
outfitted with different lenses which will give you just about any viewing field that you might
require. You can choose wireless video from 300 ft to 3 miles, motion activated, etc.

To save yourself hours of searching, I recommend that you contact them and explain your
needs, they have been very helpful for me. But looking at all they have can be fun. Lots of
toys to look at and dream about, this is where the catalog is useful.

I am interested in knowing how this all turns out.

Good point

Physically, it's an allotment, an area for growing vegetables
sandwiched between a nice housing estate and a not so nice one. All
allotments get people snooping around pinching tools from sheds, but I
don't think he's had much trouble recently to be honest.

Well, I'd want to hide the kit fairly well, which is why I like small
and cheap. A solar panel wouldn't attract attention because no-one
overlooks it. And I don't propose to either intentionally publish the
webcam to all or to disclose its location, but if someone happens
across the address
I
don't suppose it'll do any damage .. I'd deal with that as it became a
problem.

True, but I think they are too far away.

Aye, that's where I was mostly hoping someone would know the best option.

On and off is good, for power saving, and is sufficient for the moment.

Good grinful and useful stuff, thanks :-)
