there's a good library for generating pdf's with php - see 
http://uk.php.net/pdf for more information.

i've used it before with some success - relatively simply to learn.

however, this means you need (or your friendly server person needs) to 
install pdflib

otherwise, there are some other means of generating pdf's without 
installing an external library
