[thelist] Javascript methods playing up

Hi guys,

Can anyone give me a rational explanation of why the following causes IE 
to choke?

    var pageTitle = 
document.getElementsByTagName('title')[0].firstChild.nodeValue;

It works perfectly in Firefox and Opera.
