I've used swish-e for ages, and swish before that. It's clunky but I'm
used to it. <http://swish-e.org/>
I wrote a page a while back about adding a search engine to a hypermail
archive (another piece of venerable Kevin Hughes software that works
just fine): <http://www.crispen.org/doc/hypermail/archive_search.html>
and you may find a few useful remarks in it.
