Just a quick thought here:

your home page with default language is at /home.html
there visitors may select another language, and the uris for those are like:
/en/aboutus.html
/fr/aboutus.html
which would be rewritten to:
aboutus.html?lang=en
aboutus.html?lang=fr
and when creating the menus you'd just add the language identifier in 
the path.

I hope you get the idea from my messy explanation :-)
