Actually it's Netscape which started the (ab)use of HTML in e-mail.
Microsoft didn't come into the game until later.

Or, as they say where I come from: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
Actually "if it ain't broke, don't break it" probably fits closer here,
which is pretty sad.
