Yup. We're actually about to release a new version of our website, and
had to back up the train a half a day so that I can go back in change
all the "headers" to H1 tags. I just copied the current css formatting
and used that to overwrite the H1 in the .css file. (make sure padding
and margin are 0px;). Visually you can't tell the difference, but if it
helps the SEO Gods, then so be it.
