I'll be sure to check with the IT dept.  They are, from my experience, very
good about being on top of things, and staying up to date as far as software
goes.  Now they've update the hardware which should be a harmonious fusion.
I'm not big into back end/server admin work, but I do know that they are big
Linux fans, which as you mentioned has it's potential drawbacks.

We'll see, there's always a chance of Murphy's Law rearing it's ugly head.
I'll be sure to run the software version question by them.
