Probably not what you're looking for, for several reasons (e.g. it's not
free), but Microsoft OneNote has changed my life in exactly the way you
describe.

It's incredibly useful if, like me, you want to sit in meetings taking
unstructured notes for personal use and then be able to find them again
months later. I used to have documents everywhere, now I just put it all
into OneNote.
