How about telling your friends that pressing ctrl (or apple) and
clicking the link opens the link in a new browser window (or tab in
firefox) ? ;-)

good suggestion actually but when I tried it in IE6 which a lot of them use,
it didn't work.  ( only right and open in new browser window) 
Worked in firefox for me. 
Don't really want to put a huge load of instructions to confuse them for
different browsers. 

But its actually something that I will think about and write the
instructions at the top of the photo page in future for the time being.

How do other people educate their audience when it involves such a broad
spectrum of users ?
