Were you being facetious? I can't tell.

I don't see how requiring JavaScript in addition to CSS makes things any
more "device-independent."

As long as this feature is non-critical (sure sounds like it), I don't
see any reason to use something other than :focus (unless you are
philosophically opposed to such pseudo-classes, which I have heard before).
