Don't work with the images, downsizing, etc. using a limited palette. In
order to downsize a gif, convert it to 24 bit true color, resize, then
convert back to gif with 256 or less colors. Edges will stay much
smoother and the "break up" will not be there.
I don't use either of the programs mentioned, so I can't give you
specific steps.
