&sup1;, &sup2; and &sup3; only exist to support the Latin-1 character set.

If you're authoring HTML markup, use the superscript element because
<sup>1</sup> and &sup1; do not render the same - but <sup>1</sup> will
render consistently alongside other superscript elements e.g.
"1<sup>st</sup>",
