The install was pre-packaged to get the paths right, fortunately.

However, my ISP had another copy of Tomcat running, and both were competing for port 8080 (visible with netstat -an) So, I shut down theirs, killed some leftover processes (ps -ef), started up mine, and the pages served properly. 

Sometimes, to state the problem is to solve it...

What's the file name? Tomcat 5.x derives the Context path from the
file name; the path attribute will be ignored if the Context is specified
outside conf/server.xml.
