it sounds hard, but there are tools that do the math; fairly sure PHP and Perl both have bits already done where all you do is give it coords and it does the math. just heading out the door so I can't track down the examples I've got here somewhere; sorry.

you don't actually have to know how to calculate great circle distances, you just need a trustworthy black box.
