[thelist] quote in variable

I have this line,
var answer = window.confirm("Would you like to delete the publication  
" + the_publication + "; #" + ticket_num + "?");

It works well except when the variable the_publication has a quote in  
it.  For example "Chapter titled, as if you didn't know".

How do I deal with that?
