I agree with Tris.  Store your files somewhere on the system outside of 
the public location.  Authenticate the user as normal.  Point your
script to where your files are.  Generate a list, and when the user
clicks on one of the files have PHP hand it to them.  Tris give the
technical description, I'm just trying to help explain the process.
