yes, it's proprietary to MySQL, and also PostgreSQL, although the syntax is 
slightly different

but since the "easy-as-pie" tutorial is already very MySQL-specific, i see 
no harm in using LIMIT

you should see the contortions you have to go through to get the equivalent 
of LIMIT in standard SQL

to say nothing of pulling a random row

not for the faint of heart!!
