[thelist] cannot set overflow for <td>, is wrapping content in <td> with another element the only way?

The problem being not sure of how wide the cell should be, from the
server side. Also not sure about user's choice of font size and
typeface from server end. However this can be workaround-ed, it only
takes some time, so your solution is the best one if I cannot solve
it on CSS level.
