[thelist] Sharepoint a database?

I was working on a data model for a records management system we are contracted to deliver and the team lead says, "We don't need a database... we have Microsoft SharePoint."

I inquired, "Shouldn't we have a NORMALIZED data store for efficient storage and retrieval of data?"

The lead says, "SharePoint does this... we don't need Oracle or SQL."

Hmm... has technology changed since my last project?  Is SharePoint a database?  Should I shut my mouth and forge ahead, or... ?
