Agreed. The heart of the problem is the asymmetry of the domain
names.

I'd suggest purchasing the 3rd domain and using the "original" as a
single disambiguation page.

 So plain old example.com just shows links to exampleGM.com and
exampleFord.com. And promote the hell out of exampleGM.com in
that geographical market.
