Hi Fred,

I designed my ecommerce solution to meet similar needs. Rather than having a
strict category -> product  relationship, I added an additional linking
table in the db to allow products to be assigned to multiple categories. 

A single product (media object, or whatever) can be assigned to author,
subject, media type, subject, date, anything at all. This allows a user to
find what they are looking for without drilling down, and potentially
missing it.
