If your site is busy enough you should do a user survey once in a while, 
they are the ones who will know. I do newspaper sites and we run with 
1024x768 because our users are happy with it first and because the 
industry uses it second.

As it happens I run my own machine at 1920x1200 and the guy across the 
desk from me thinks I should go up another step.
