It was fasthosts' website that got me calling it "Virtual Server". I've
since discovered that this is what everyone else calls "cloud hosting"
:-)

The most promising candidate right now is www.elastichosts.com who seem
flexible, cheap and helpful. I'll post more details later, assuming we
go with them. If anyone is interested they do a 5-day free trial, by the
way - you can configure and use servers to your heart's content, to give
you an idea of how their system works and what the options are.
