Hello Will,

This is what I use
 <a id="call" href="tel:xxxx xxx xxxx">Phone t:  xxxx xxx xxxx</a><br />
style aside href="tel:whatever" is what makes it work

At the time I was using
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//WAPFORUM//DTD XHTML Mobile 1.2//EN" "http://www.openmobilealliance.org/tech/DTD/xhtml-mobile12.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en">

<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="application/vnd.wap.xhtml+xml; charset=UTF-8"/>

I don't think you need mobile DOCTYPE
