OK - let me ask the question I've always been unclear about.

If you could build your own would you still use an off-the-shelf CMS and why?

As I see it. It is the same concept as a list of fields and types from which the integrator can loop.

Other CMSes also do, like:

Tiki Wiki called trackers
Expression Engine called Loops
Drupal (bla bla bla)
//...

Not a bad idea when you want a solution where you are establishing businesses rules without hiring a software architect.


My feeling about it.

It suits most people needs. It just do not scale.

<Experience>
My former company extended a conference management made that way in tiki. 

They were living with it for at least 6 years managing 2 conferences. Every year improving bits and pieces.

The third year working with them. We built the application from scratch. Because we reached limits of recursion with Smarty (tiki uses it). 

Not to forget that every period of the conference we had to swith their site to a dedicated virtual machine amd crank up the RAM+CPU.
