[Javascript] download text file

I think you got my point. I need to synchronize the download time 
with the download status of a certain file. But  I want is to have 
a download status like increasing bar eg, 1 bar for 10% 2 bars for 
20% and so on. How can I compute and synchronize the download time.
If asp is the answer what should I need to install  in my pc. Is this is
compatible to different browsers like netscape.
