501c, or, more accurately, 501(c)(3), is the part of the U.S. Code that 
defines and outlines the rules and regulations regarding the tax-exempt 
status of nonprofit organizations.  When somebody uses "501(c)(3)" as a 
noun, they are simply referring to a nonprofit organization.
