we can, but there isn't much we can short of dumping entire portions of the sidebar.

yes, all separate queries, but also all heavily cached.

the performance problem is bad enough that a resultset of 800 causes the initial hit to the database to take between 7000 and 10000 ms to return the resultset.  as the number of articles climbs, so will the response time.  reducing the number of articles that are returned seems to have a positive effect on that response time.
