in ie, go to internet tools > options.  on the general tab click the
settings button for temporary internet files.  check and see whether or not
you've got it set to "every visit to the page".  for some reason on that
setting images in preload scripts don't get cached.  change it to something
else like "automatically" and it works just fine.
