Way OT here, but I need a bit o' help. If anyone has a solaris box and
wouldn't mind helping me by extracting a pkg file then tar'ing it back
up, I'd appreciate  :)

The <filename>.tar.gz  is a common set of extensions when transferring
software.

Did you know you can uncompress and untar in one easy step? Instead of 
gunzip filename.tar.gz | tar xvf -

to unzip and untar the file, try:

tar -zxvf filename.tar.gz

This will automagically unzip before untarring, saving you a step.
