There is a new image format that is currently under development by several
groups (working toward a standard as I understand it) called jpeg 2000. I
read about it in the current issue of Communication Arts (Sept/Oct 2k
pp212) and www.lizardtech.com is one of the participants. Lizardtech
already have some proprietary developments that are pretty cool--their
compressed DjVu 2.8 MB document compares with a 147 MB PDF. You can get
free viewers for NN and IE for DjVu and their Mr SID image format via the
website. Image quality is improved and you have smaller file sizes as well
(compared with jpeg) and it has better color reproduction so it's
something to worth looking at for both print and web.
