I'm in the same boat as you.  Just beginning to delve into PHP and MySQL
without any programming background.  Here are a few newbie, but very
manageable, books I've bought:

PHP Fast and Easy (Julie Meloni)

Sam's Teach Yourself MySQL

Apache for Dummies (mostly Unix oriented, but still helpful for my PC set
up)


As an aside, if you need to get your DB up and running sooner than you can
"master" PHP, check out www.flattext.com, a very interesting web site which
lets you custom write a cgi script to handle a flat file database as well as
provide a user friendly interface for a client to maintain it.
