[thelist] SQL Query Tips?

I'm working with a database that is literally hunderds of thousands 
of times larger than the next largest I've worked with, and am 
feeling anxiety over my fondness and habit of using a lot of 
subqueries and queries that select things from many tables.

Can someone point me to a resource that has tips on making decisions 
between using subqueries and designing the database so they are 
unnecessary? Stuff like that?
