i have an original release of win98 on one of my machines and it's never
been connected to the net through any other means than via a network.  never
heard of the networking issue you're describing or the supposed bug and
never had any problems with it.

if you're not going to use a hub then you'll need to use a special cable
called a cross-over cable.  otherwise go buy a hub for $30 and call it a
day.  then down the road when you want to add a third computer it's as easy
as plugging it into the hub.
