[thelist] Scanners w/ 35mm slide option?

I have used many film scanners and flatbeds with adaptors. I have not seen
a flatbed scanner that would give me good enough results that I could use
for web graphics. The Sapphire film scanner although shaped somewhat flat
and rectangular, is not a flatbed scanner. It does not scan reflective
material and its price-tag would keep it out of reach for most of us.

The original post asked for a film scanner (where price was important). All
that is really available IMHO is the Polaroid Sprintscan and the Minolta
Dimage Scan Elite. I have used both and they can give good results. These
are in the $500 and below area. The next level is over $1100 and would
include the Nikon Coolscan III. I used the first generation Coolscan many
years ago and was not impressed with it, I have however heard they have
gotten much better.

One more alternative that may help you is (this would depend on whether or
not you had a decent digital camera) would be to get a slide adaptor for
your digital camera and "scan" your slides and negs with it. I have one for
my traditional Nikon 35mm cameras and it would work nicely if I had a Nikon
D1(wishfull thinking).

Cheers
John
