crap, every time I think I'm just emailing Amanda...

for those web video types out there--
<tip>
encoding tips for Quicktime (but good advice to follow with almost any
codec)
source material: keep it clean, keep it first-generation, keep it digital,
and (if possible) have it shot so that you have little or no camera
movement. Also, lots of light--production people might complain that it's
overlit, but once it gets to the codec it usually helps tremendously.
if you're working from tape source, remember: VHS = Satan. Ask for better
source, or give a quality disclaimer up front.
Use an encoder that can do 2-pass VBR encoding. Media Cleaner is great for
this.
watch your frame rate and your aspect ratio. stick with standard sizes,
there are scattered reports of non-4:3 clips crashing some players/machines.
for Sorensen: Often used is the ' play back doubled feature, since Sorenson
doubles up
so nicely.
A little contrast, balnced with a little brightness usually helps
compression. Also, a slight blur filter will often help reduce noise and
consequently reduce the amount of data that the codec has to handle.
(some of this is paraphrased from a post by Vince Dunham on the Media
Cleaner list)
