[thelist] FYI: Weird Exchange 2000 "feature"

Hi guys.

The chief sysadmin at my company just told me about this problem so I
thought I'd pass it on.

We're running Exchange Server 2000 here. One of the admins was installing
MS' FTP server (crappy, I know) on the same machine using Win2K's
"Add/Remove Windows Components" thingy. A while later, it turns out that the
SMTP service ain't working any more. Why? 'Cause it's been uninstalled!

Weird. Nobody at our company uninstalled it! Turns out (from a forum posting
on Win2000mag.com) that Exchange 2000 uninstalls the SMTP service if you
install something like an FTP server through the "Add/Remove" applet. You
then have to configure Exchange all over again.

I know it's crazy. We're following it up with Microsoft.

Just thought I'd share it with you folks.

Madhu
