Dreamweaver Site Synch (was Re: [thelist] synchronizing remote/local)

JD,

It had occurred to me that perhaps the trouble with Dreamweaver is fixable,
or that I am misinterpreting the issue. The problems I have encountered with
Dreamweaver's site synchronize feature (on a Mac G3/128 MB RAM/DW3/T1) are
these:

1) When I choose "Put newer files to remote," most of the files chosen by
Dreamweaver to upload are not newer files at all. Some of them may not have
been edited in years (images). Even after they've been uploaded, a later
site synchronization brings them up again.

2) the process of comparing files between local and remote drives is very
slow and seems to demand all available system resources.

I have experienced this on similar setups at two different employers. The
"local" drive in both cases is a network drive, although this shouldn't make
a difference.

If Dreamweaver, like Interarchy, is comparing file sizes, then I think (1)
may be due to the fact that the local Macintosh file size is apparently
larger than the remote file size, since the resource fork or some other
superfluous information is lost/removed in the transfer to the server.

(2) May be attributable in part to the way the Macintosh allocates
resources, but my experience with other software makes me question this
hypothesis.

As I refamilarize myself this afternoon with Interarchy (formerly Anarchie),
however, I find it nimble, and I can watch it skipping past whole
directories of files that do not need to be uploaded. The only complaint I
have so far is that when Interarchy is in the front, the
application-switching function of Microsoft Office Manager is disabled.

If you can offer a solution to my trouble with Dreamweaver, John, I'll
gladly try it. I am skeptical, though, that a program with built-in file
transfer tools will outperform a standalone product anytime soon.
