Some branding depts are now starting to get a clue, and have relaxed
to the stage of "If you can find colours which are at least recognisable
as the brand identity then you can use them... consistently, dammit" - ie
they're starting to realise that they need separate guidelines for online
use.

Not that they'll often accept web safe colours as being close enough...
a previous job had the main web colours as #0080ff and #400000

Mind you, that was the same place where I spent an hour with one of
the branding people trying to get a form of words for the home page which
encapsulated the brand values in under 20 words - she kept on coming
out with 50 word texts which just wouldn't fit. Eventually, I wrote them
(and she signed them off, in relief as much as anything)

You're lucky! Especially large companies have _marketing departments_ who
are on par with accountants (no disrespect) for their anal attention to
detail. It's their JOB to make sure everything related to the company is
consistent, and by durn if that color is one-half-shade off you need to redo
it.
