[thelist] FTP problems!

Regarding my FTP difficulty saga, I perhaps have some concrete info ...
Background: I have difficulty FTPing to my NT accounts with a host,
but can FTP to my UNIX accounts just fine. It's FTP Serv-U 2.5i
running on NT 4/IIS 4. I can successfully FTP things with Fetch, but
with lots of errors, nothing else on Win or Mac works, including FTP
with the command-line.
Occasionally, the directory will list just fine, and the FTP
transcript looks like this - this is on a UNIX box:
LIST
150 Opening ASCII mode data connection for directory listing.
total 192
drwxr-xr-x 3 630 503 4096 Apr 21 2000 cgi-bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 630 503 974 Apr 24 2000 flash.gif
[the rest of the directory listing]
-rw-r--r-- 1 630 503 25646 Apr 24 2000 vaz.swf
-rw-r--r-- 1 630 503 941 Sep 11 2000 vaz_circ.gif
226 Transfer complete.
For sessions that don't work, 226 is received while the directory
listing is downloading (or sometimes not at all) and the transcript
looks like below (also seems weird that my FTP client asks to
identify the current directory more than once):
Connecting to 2xx.1xx.xx.xx port 21 (1/31/01 4:09:14 PM)
220 Serv-U FTP-Server v2.5i for WinSock ready...

ABOR
500 'ABOR': command not understood.
Previous to me sending the ABOR command, the FTP client thinks
there's more data coming. This makes it impossible to FTP with
anything I have tried other that Fetch, which allows me to abort the
transfer of the listing.
Something that seems similar to me is that NT accounts on this
network (including the host's site) never complete loading when
accessed by a Mac ... horrors - I need to know when the onload event
fires for a site I'm doing, but it never does, despite the fact the
whole page has downloaded.
Also, if I delete everything that's not a subdirectory, the home
directory always loads fine.
Also, it intermittantly works perfectly for a period of a few hours,
then goes kaput again.
HELP! ME! SOMEBODY!
PS. Suggestions and questions like "Try passive mode" and "Are you
behiond a firewall? Try bypassing it." are not needed ... the problem
is outside of the network I'm on, as it's experienced by others with
entirely different set ups and connections to the Internet, and I've
tried everything I can regarding my firewall, including connecting a
computer directly to the Internet.
