[thelist] chat problem

First off, Macs *do* have Java, it's just very unreliable.

Second, there are really only two other options I know of:

  - HTML-based
    Pros: Works almost everywhere
Cons: Clunky and slow, because it requires constant page refreshing of
some sorts.
  - Plug-in
Pros: Will usually act similar to a Java chat (features, etc.)
Cons: Not always available everywhere, hit-or-miss with reliability,
etc.

The last plug-in I remember seeing was ichat (www.ichat.com), but I don't
remember what happened to them, I think they got bought.

For HTML-based, they should be available in a variety of languages Perl,
ColdFusion, ASP, probably others. For cross-platform reliability,
HTML-based is your best option.
