Sometime this year, webmail is supposed to overtake regular email. That means that the entire concept of mailto: is kinda dangerous.

I hardly mean to take issue with you but...'kinda dangerous'? There are thousands, nay millions, of dollars invested in 'standard' e-mail based structures that is not going away anytime soom. Web mail is taking over in terms of the newly, great unwashed who are coming to the web in droves. It'll be a very cold day in El Paso when web mail takes over in corporate/business/experienced-with-the-web world where most of us live.
