Peter, I've done tons of research on this, as this question seems to come 
up rather frequently at various discussion lists. Check out 
WebsiteTips.com's design section: <http://www.websitetips.com/design/>.

You'll find an entire section on cross-browser, cross-platform font issues. 
Included in the annotated listing are sites or pages that have screen shots 
showing differences, lists of fonts that come with Macs, PCs, Windows 95, 
98, various programs, etc.

There's also a great article in there about which order to use fonts in 
your designations, etc. -- the title of the article is something like 
"Improving Appearance of Arial Font on the Macintosh," by Bob Baumel.
