This would be the downside of participating in a Web development list.

How do you know that code examples are in fact being rendered in
plaintext, for everybody?

Argh.

There should be a practice for dealing with this.  Ideas, anyone?

I don't have any, but that's because PINE handles this stuff automatically
according to MIME type.
