does it matter?  i know that's kind of a snarky question -- but i'm asking
it with sincerity.

not knowing you're answer, let me give you a couple of ideas of its purpose.

1)  keyboard navigation -- how else am i going to
    know where the focus is on the page?

2)  a visual indication of the place on the page
    that i clicked after hitting the back button
    and returning to the page.
