I think you're right - it is similar to the translation issue.

One thought though - rather than having separate URLs for different version
(although this is useful for testing purposes), would it not be more
consistent
for users to have the same URL which simply rendered differently based on
user preferences?

I guess there are plenty solutions. This is +- the same problem when doing
multilingual sites.

You could use a cookie and update it if the user change his choice. You
could choose the version based on a directory :

www.site.com/text/site

www.site.com/fullhtml/site

www.site.com/flash/site ...
