Well, do I have egg on MY face. I just stumbled upon the answer to this
perplexing problem this morning, thanks, to you, Greg. You know what it is?
It's not the Reader; it's the file extensions.

I put lots of PDFs on one of my client's sites months ago which were read
just fine in I.E. 5.x and NN4.7 .... but would not display in Net6.x. I
thought it was the new browser's fault. But, when you said "file
associations" that set me to thinking. . . and sure enough! The PDFs my
client sent me months ago all have their file extensions in uppercase as in
xyz.PDF. I didn't think anything of it since the other two browsers
displayed them just fine. So, I'm going to be doing a lot of renaming of PDF
files this morning and reloading to the site. I'm sure that's the answer.

Again, thanks so much.
